Poverty’s Grip On Maine Tightens, Thanks to the Legislature’s New Budget

Stephen King explains why WKIT and WZON will be hosting an event featuring members of the community who are negatively impacted by the Maine Legislature’s final budget, “I grew up Methodist, and I remember a lot of those scriptural readings I heard in church. One of them, from the book of Matthew, quotes Jesus: "Here is the truth: anything you did not do for the least of these, you did not do for me." Or, from the book of Luke, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." The poor are just as much a part of our community as the rich. They deserve bread for their tables, a roof over their heads, clothes to wear, and shoes to walk in. When we do for them, we do for ourselves. It's called sharing the love.”

5.17.12 - On this edition of The Pulse Morning Show:

Wednesday, May 23 is the day for WZON's "Faces of the Poor" forum being held at Husson University's Gracie Theatre from 6 to 9 pm. One of the ladies assisting with the organization of the event is Nancy Webster, works with the UMaine School of Social Work and has a practice as a licensed clinical social worker in Bangor. Nancy joined us to talk about why she wanted to be a part of the upcoming forum, and what she sees as the greatest challenges facing the poor in today's world.

The "initial public offering", or IPO, of stock in the company Facebook happens tomorrow, and that sale could net Facebook as much as 100 billion dollars. At the same time, JP Morgan (JPM) is being chastised for losing some 3 billion dollars in a shaky investment scheme, and their CEO is barely hanging on to his job. We wanted to talk to an expert, so we reached out to Chris Hill, host of the wildly successful "Motley Fool Money Radio Program" which airs every weekend on WZON. Chris, a Waterville native, says he’d advise people to stay far away from Facebook stock at this point, and while 3 billion dollars sounds like a big loss, it's really just a fraction of the money made annually by JPM, one of the world's largest banks.

The organization Americans Elect (AE) has been working to get a third option on the ballot in the Presidential election since last year...and now it looks like that effort is going to fall short. We talked with Eliot Cutler, a member of the board of directors for AE and the founder of OneMaine about what went right, what went wrong, and what comes next for Americans Elect.

Bangor is home to a great museum, and they have a brand new exhibit you're going to want to check out! The Bangor Museum and Center for History is now featuring "Women in War, 1861-1865". The museum's executive director, Jennifer Pictou, visited the studio and told us all about the exhibit and what makes it so very cool. She also told us about some recent vandalism at the museum that's very expensive to repair, and also about the museum losing their web/email hosting company soon, which has left them scrambling for a replacement of those donated services.
